USA Today - Lake Como is the most beautiful
USA Today - Lake Como is the most beautiful
4 DECEMBER 2018
Rick Steves, journalist of the popular American newspaper USA Today, yesterday dedicated a long report on the nature and romance of the northern Italian lakes region, focusing in particular on the three most important ones, namely the Garda, the Maggiore and obviously our Lario , the lake that has literally conquered it.
"Lake Como - writes the journalist - offers the best mix of accessibility, landscapes, sightseeing and relaxation, with an intoxicating scent of old aristocratic times. Lake Como is flanked by luxurious villas, framed by snow-capped mountains and crossed by fleets of small ferries that dart from one beautiful city to another. The most famous is Bellagio, a self-proclaimed "Pearl of the Lake", a combination of ancient class and luxury of the new world. Steep climbs from the harbor front to a handful of sun-kissed squares. With beautiful five-star hotels and luxury shops, Bellagio is especially for affluent travelers. "
But it is Varenna's favorite of Rick Steves: "Encloses its 800 inhabitants in a compact urban landscape on the less developed side of the lake. Single houses are defined only by their pastel colors, and the old city has no streets - only characteristic stepped alleyways. The walkway - a walk along the lakefront that connects the ferry pier to the historic center - is a nice place to wander around ".
For garden lovers - Steves writes - Villa Carlotta is the best - especially in spring, when many of its plants are in full bloom. But the largest estate is Villa del Balbianello, located on a promontory near the village of Lenno and has been featured in the films "Casino Royale" and "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones".
